Route 239 is asphalted, and has very little traffic.
After cycling for 5.2 km you reach a junction with Route 241, where you should turn left. Route 241 is also asphalted, and is slightly busier than the road you have been on. The road continues along Trondheimsfjorden.
Detour After 1.6 km it is possible to take a detour down to the Grandefjæra nature reserve. Marking: Grandefjæra Grunneierlag. Read more about Grandefjæra nature reserve. Here you can cycle on the damn, and there are information boards, benches and a shelter with a bonfire site.
250 metres after the side-road to Grandefjæra nature reserve you will arrive at another junction. The road to the left heads down to the fjord (100 metres), where you can go swimming from a white sand beach. Our route to Kråkvåg turns right at the junction. If you continue straight ahead, you will reach the port of Beian (700 metres), where the Hurtigruten coastal express used to stop. Accommodation is available in fisherman’s cabins.
Back on the route, the next village is Rønsholmen, a small community based around a fish-food factory, which was closed down some years ago. Accommodation is available in fisherman’s cabins.
Shortly after Rønsholmen there is a bridge across to the island of Garten. From the bridge it is 2.1 km to the ferry stop on Garten, which is 200 metres off the main road on the right. Garten has a pleasant old fishing port, and there are a couple of accommodation options in fisherman’s cabins.
The ferry from Garten to Storfosna takes 20 minutes. On weekdays there is a ferry roughly every half hour all day long. Prices: Adults NOK 30, Children NOK 16. Also see Fosenlinjens routes at www.fosenlinjen.no
Alternative route: From Garten it is possible to take a ferry to Værnes on the southern side of Trondheimsfjorden. From Værnes it is a pleasant cycle rid to Valset (approx. 15 km). From Valset you can take a ferry back to Brekstad (20 minutes).
Storfosna ferry stop–Kråkvåg: 7.9 km. From the ferry stop you can cycle across the verdant island of Storfosna. After 1.5 km you will reach a grocery shop. From there, it is 400 metres to the next junction. Turn left at the junction, and after a few moments you will find yourself cycling through the grounds a 12th century manor, Storfosen Gods. On Storfosna there is a chance that you will encounter red deer and roe deer, which can be hunted during the hunting season. There are several sites for bathing and fishing.
Follow the signs to Kråkvåg at the next junction, which will take you to the new causeway/ bridge to Kråkvåg. It is 2 km long, and was completed in 2004. Fishing is possible from the bridge. Over on the island of Kråkvåg the road splits into three branches: the left-hand one goes to the old quay and factory (1.3 Km), the right-hand one goes to Storslåttøya (where there is accommodation) and straight ahead takes you to accommodation, restaurants and other services. 1.7 km to the end of the road. On Kråkvåg there are excellent beaches as well as traditional hot tubs. Fishing from land or from a boat. Kråkågsvaet (the area by the bridge/ causeway) is an internationally protected waterfowl habitat (Ramsar).
Return to Brekstad Back on the mainland you can choose to take Route 241 right back to Brekstad instead of Route 239; the distance is about the same. Route 241 runs alongside the Ørland military airport. |
