Start from the tourist information centre and follow Bergmannsgata and Svenskeveien up to Sjøbakken (junction on Route 31 at the southern end of Hittersjøen). Follow Route 31 approx. 3.5 km from Sjøbakken until you reach the sign to Erlia. Ascent of around 100 metres over the first 3 km of this road. The road runs through idyllic and lush summer farms down to Vintervollveien by the River Glåma. An alternative route is to turn off Route 31 approx. 1 km after Sjøbakken, taking a road that goes almost up to the top of Enarsvloa and meets

Erlidalsveien at Mølmannskøkkja. This is rather steeper, but the views make it worth it! Turn left along Vintervollveien and continue until you reach Route 30 at Nyplassbruan. Cross the bridge, continue past Orvos Camping and take the first turning left. Follow this road past Kvernengan, Sundet and back to Røros.

Attractions

The summer farms in this area date back to the early days of the mines. Between Orvos and Sundet you will pass some of the oldest farms in Røros. Rørosgård is situated at the confluence of the Røa and Glåma. "Røosen" - which means the mouth of the river Røa - gave its name to Røros. On your way into Røros you will see Kvitsanden. This is a large area of blown sand that is often called northern Europe’s largest desert. In fact Kvitsanden isn´t a desert, it is the end of the esker that runs from Lake Femunden to Røros. There are a lot of fine particles here, so if it is dry and there is a strong wind, the sand is blown into the air and forms dunes. This was such a problem for the local farmers, that they planted mountain pines and lyme grass to stop the spread of the sand. When the smelting house was in operation, producing large quantities of sulphurous gas, the open sand area was much larger. Now that the pollution has gone, the vegetation is starting to reclaim Kvitsanden.
